Overdue for more vacation pics...

Sorry I'm falling behind yet again, dear readers. It's a friggin pain to go through all the Dominica pictures. There were maybe 300 originally, but even after culling 50 which didn't turn out, I have to sift through the rest, then shrink the ones I want to upload so I don't hit the flickr limits. Lame.

Anyway...

This is a picture of a church in the capital, Roseau. In total, we only have three pictures of Roseau, despite stopping through there on two different days. It's actually a really run down, hot, ugly smelly place, unlike the rest of the island. It's a shame, because that's pretty much all the people coming off the cruise ships get to see. On the flip side, it has a few internet cafes and vegetarian-friendly restaurants, so it's not all bad.

That same day, we continued south of the city and stopped off at Champagne beach to ask about snorkeling. Neither Tara nor I can swim, although she has snorkeled before and said this wasn't an issue. Despite multiple people telling us this was one of the easiest places on the island, she didn't feel comfortable with the choppiness of the water and the sudden dropoffs in the area. We didn't get to go into the water really, but it was a cool, boulder-strewn beach.

Our final destination was Scotts Head. It is an almost-island in the far south of the island, connected to the main island by a small natural causeway of gravel. It was an amazing place, as you literally have the Caribbean on one side of you, and the Atlantic on the other - and you can see a real difference, with the latter water having waves three times the size. The series of photos following is our ascending the "mountaintop" It was a rough climb mainly due to the reedy grasses which covered the hillside. The whole place reeked of ginger though, which was amazing.

My favorite picture of the entire trip. Tara is scared of heights, as you can see.

A picture from Sari Sari falls. We have comparably little from this hike, as we had a local guide who was pushing us along quite fast. It was amazing when we got to the end, but we saw even better falls later on.

This is just a little bird I saw sitting at a table at the restaurant at Jungle Bay (a local eco-hotel thing). The hotel was far too expensive to stay at, but the restaurant itself had tons of vegan options, so we ended up eating there three times when on the island.

The last couple pictures of the day are all from Emerald Pool, a little swimming hole which a small waterfall goes into. A very easy hike, but fairly out of the way.

This one was from the "scenic view" on the way back. We have dozens of similar shots banging around if you'd like to see more.

Anyway, that's it for now. Hopefully I can wrap up the picture dump in 2 more posts
